Becoming a certified tutor at the center takes approximately one year. The training program at the center is accredited by the International Multisensory Structural Language Education Council (IMSLEC) to certify tutors in Orton-Gillingham instruction. All applicants must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (does not need to be in education.)
To successfully complete the training program, scholars must attend 50 hours of seminar covering reading development, dyslexia, and the Orton-Gillingham approach. Scholars must prepare and teach a total of 100 hours of one-on-one Orton-Gillingham lessons to two students in a supervised practicum.
The tuition for the Teacher Level Training Course and practicum is underwritten by the Scottish Rite Masons. Scholars are not compensated for training or practicum hours. Scholars are responsible for purchasing the required course material at a cost of $200.
5 hrs of university credit are available through Butler University. Teachers can earn continuing education points.
